Here is a little history lesson: the first dental crowns are believed to have been created by Etruscans around 700 B.C. And many of them were made out of gold only. It was not until the mid-1800s that the first porcelain dental crowns started being used by dentists. Dental crowns and bridges are fixed prosthetic devices that are cemented onto an existing damaged teeth or implant.

What are dental crowns?

A dental crown covers a damaged tooth in your mouth strengthening it and improving its shape and alignment. You can choose between porcelain and ceramic and have it match the color of your natural teeth.

You can also choose other materials such as gold and metal alloys and acrylic. There are many issues that a dental crown can rectify such as preventing or restoring a fractured tooth, replace a filling that has little tooth material left, and attach a bridge. A dental crown can cover an implant, a tooth that is discolored or poorly shaped or a tooth after a root canal procedure.

What are dental bridges?

A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by joining an artificial tooth to a neighboring tooth or implant. When there are gaps because of missing teeth, it can cause the remaining teeth to shift into an empty space creating an imbalance in your mouth.

The dental bridges are cemented to your natural teeth or implants. Similar to a crown, a porcelain or ceramic bridge can match the color of your natural teeth. Some of the issues resulting from missing teeth, include a bad bite, gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

How are crowns and bridges made?

Your dentist will first apply anesthetic to numb your tooth in order to drill and reduce its size for the purpose of being able to fit a crown or a bridge properly. It removes the outer surface of your tooth on the top and all sides to construct enough room for the crown.

In the next step, your dentist will make an impression of your tooth with a paste or putty to get an exact mold for the crown or bridge. A digital scanner is now sometimes used to make the impression. If you have chosen a porcelain crown, the proper shade will be chosen to match the color of your existing teeth.

The impression is then shipped to a dental lab while a temporary crown is placed over your tooth. Once your permanent crown returns from the lab, you will return for another visit where your temporary crown will be removed and your new crown cemented over your tooth and make it fit properly.

How long do crowns last?

Most of crowns and bridges can last a lifetime as long as you take good care of your teeth and have good oral hygiene. Some crowns can become loose or fall out and some bridges can be damaged by dental disease. It is important to keep your teeth and gums healthy by brushing and flossing every day as well as maintain your regular checkups.
